Achieving equity through empowerment
Afrocentric education establishes Africa (Ancient Egyptian civilization) and the Nile Valley region as central reference points, similar to the way Eurocentric education symbolizes Greece and Rome.
African culture is centered around community, family, collectivism and metaphysical belief systems. Eurocentric culture continues to emphasize individualism, competition and objectivism.
Afrocentric educators understand African values, logic and perspectives. Further, Afrocentric educators understand prevailing learning styles of black students.
Benchmarks of success are not solely focused on standardized test scores, but also include evidence of creative expression, higher-order thinking and character development.
African-centered learning approaches allow students to see themselves as leaders and contributors to society reversing generations of systemic devaluation and marginalization.
Afrocentric education centers black students firmly inside African culture, science, math and social studies. Students come to understand the significant contributions black people continue to make in arts, humanities and STEM fields.
Individuals, families and communities deserve safe living conditions with access to clean water, healthy food, quality healthcare, education, housing and jobs that offer livable wages. Human rights for all people requires an investment in safeguarding dignity for communities who have been historically marginalized.
